CATARACT SURGERY

 

The eye is like a little camera. Cataract means that the lens of the camera has become cloudy producing a blurred or distorted picture. Some of the common symptoms of a cataract are increased difficulty with glare, halos around light, diminished color vision, and the need for frequent changes in prescription glasses.

At cataract surgery the cloudy lens is removed and is replaced with a clear one. The clear implant lens provides a well-focused picture and a brighter view of the world. Dr Bliss performs cataract surgery using phacoemulsification. This is an advanced technique using ultrasound technology to gently dissolve and remove the cataract through a tiny opening that is only about 3 mm in size. Specially constructed incisions allow the natural pressure inside the eye to seal the opening without stitches in most cases. These techniques offer patients a comfortable recovery and rapid return of clear vision.

With a clear normal lens, the images are focused clearly on the retina. Vision is clear. With a cataract,the lens is cloudy, causing the image to become blurred and yellowed. Vision is hazy and colors become faded.

Shown is a normal, clear field of view as seen through the clear lens of the eye. When a cataract is present , vision becomes darkened, cloudy, yellow and blurred.
 

The Surgery

A very small "No Stitch" incision is made in the side of the cornea. Such an incision promotes fast and more comfortable recovery.

The bag of the lens is opened and a special ultrasonic probe (phacoemulsifier) removes the cloudy lens.

 

A small foldable artificial lens is inserted through the small incision to replace the cataract lens.

 

 

The final replacement lens is shown in place. It is not required to suture the small "No Stitch" incision.

Accomodative Implant Lenses

The Crystalens HD is a 4th generation of the orginal Crystalens. The Crystalens accommodating intraocular lens is engineered with a hinge designed to allow the optic, or part of the lens that you see through, to move back and forth as you constantly change focus on images around you. The surface of the Crystalens HD has been shaped to enhance the depth of focus with a proprietary optical modification. Treatment of Astigmatism
